# 8 ChatGPT Alternatives Worth Trying in 2026, and What Each One Is For

_By Ecompanda. Published July 15, 2023, updated October 16, 2026._

ChatGPT is no longer the only serious assistant. We opened eight rivals on 16 October 2026, from Claude and Gemini to Perplexity and Mistral Vibe, and wrote down what each is for and which one a store owner should try first.

When we wrote the first version of this guide in 2023, ChatGPT had a handful of rivals and most of them had a waiting list. That list is mostly gone. Google's Bard became Gemini, Bing Chat became Copilot, and Mistral's Le Chat is now called Vibe. The tools worth your time today do far more than chat: they read files, search the web, write code and run jobs on a schedule.

So this is a rebuild, not an edit. We opened the website of eight assistants on 16 October 2026 and wrote down what each one says it does. We did not run a benchmark, and we do not quote prices, because plans change monthly and every vendor's own pricing page is a click away. What you get is a plain picture of what each tool is for, and which one to try first for the jobs a store owner actually has.

## How we compared them

We looked at the things that matter when you run an online store: writing and editing product copy, researching competitors and suppliers, working with spreadsheets and documents, help with code or theme tweaks, and how clear each vendor is about what the product does. Everything below comes from the product's own site, quoted or summarised, with the date we looked.

A caution that applies to all eight. Any assistant can state a wrong fact with confidence. If you use one to write a product page, check every size, material and claim against the real product before it goes live.

## 8 ChatGPT alternatives and what each one is for

### Claude: built for long, careful work

![Screenshot of the Claude website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/c24bf0013c2aa25db84b9a5e05638b0949ef14fa-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Claude, 16 October 2026._

[Claude](https://claude.com/product/overview) is Anthropic's assistant. Its own description is that it is an AI assistant for work: you hand it a task and it can turn ideas into decks, spreadsheets and prototypes, or run scheduled tasks across your apps and files. The page leads with the line "Give Claude more" and says to hand it a task, not just a question.

The site also notes that a feature it used to call Claude Cowork is now simply Claude, rolling out first to the Pro and Max plans. That is a good reminder that the paid tiers get new things first.

**Best for:** long writing, working through documents, and tasks that take several steps.

**Watch out for:** some of the newest features start on paid plans, so the free experience can differ from what the site shows.

### Gemini: Google's assistant, with a lot of media built in

![Screenshot of the Gemini website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/2826611ee0987ebea0fd6154cbf451f6a09a1a6f-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Gemini, 16 October 2026._

[Gemini](https://gemini.google/us/overview/?hl=en) is Google's app for talking to its latest AI models. Its navigation lists what it can do: live voice conversation (Gemini Live), image, video and music generation, Deep Research, a Canvas for working on a document or app with it, and Gemini in Chrome. There is also a feature called Personal Intelligence and a Daily Brief.

Google describes the goal as an assistant that is helpful and personal, with direct access to its newest models.

**Best for:** people who already use a Google account for everything, and anyone who wants image and video generation in the same app as their chat.

**Watch out for:** it works best when it can see your Google data, so think about what you are comfortable connecting.

### Microsoft Copilot: the one that follows you through Microsoft

![Screenshot of the Microsoft Copilot website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/2e69230ef80a44292fe907154044f1f7d384280e-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Microsoft Copilot, 16 October 2026._

[Microsoft Copilot](https://copilot.com/) describes itself as AI built to help you get things done: create, brainstorm, learn and solve problems with chat that works across your day. Its home page splits the day into Work, Life and School, and you sign in to start a conversation.

It is the obvious pick if your team already lives in Microsoft products, because that is where Microsoft is putting it.

**Best for:** teams already on Microsoft tools, and quick everyday questions.

**Watch out for:** you need to sign in, and what you get depends on the plan, so check Microsoft's plans page before you commit a team.

### Perplexity: an answer engine, not a chat for drafting

![Screenshot of the Perplexity website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/020f9c29c4e2f1fb7b672171d86fcc742cab2a19-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Perplexity, 16 October 2026._

[Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/) calls itself a free AI-powered answer engine that gives accurate, trusted and real-time answers. The interface is a search box first. Around it sit Projects, Automations, Artifacts and connectors, and a newer feature called Computer that its page describes as handing off a project to get polished, reliable deliverables.

For a store owner this is the research tool: ask about a competitor, a regulation or a supplier and get an answer with sources to check.

**Best for:** research where you want to see the sources, and quick fact checks.

**Watch out for:** it is built around search, so for long drafts and rewrites a general assistant is usually nicer to work with.

### Grok: live web and X in the answer

![Screenshot of the Grok website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/bd3e3b41df40d976be2fad9f4cb94cc55ee2d385-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Grok, 16 October 2026._

[Grok](https://grok.com/)'s own description is an AI assistant that can chat, create images, write code, and give real-time answers from the web and X. Its site now says it is built by SpaceXSI. You can drag folders into the chat, and there is an Imagine tool for pictures.

**Best for:** questions about what is happening right now, especially on X.

**Watch out for:** the company behind it has changed its name and branding, so read the current terms before you rely on it for business work.

### Meta AI: free, and inside the apps you already use

![Screenshot of the Meta AI website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/b268de3114428b7765551f1e4e8474d312ab3933-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Meta AI, 16 October 2026._

[Meta AI](https://ai.meta.com/meta-ai/assistant/) calls itself a free personal AI chatbot and assistant. It can answer questions, do research, help you shop and complete tasks, in an app, on the web, on AI glasses and inside Meta's own apps. The page also mentions scheduled tasks and a beta app for Mac.

**Best for:** quick answers inside Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook, and anyone who wants a free option.

**Watch out for:** it lives inside Meta accounts, so it is a poor fit if you want your work kept separate from them.

### Mistral Vibe: the European option, formerly Le Chat

![Screenshot of the Mistral Vibe website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/f2e8da5e0cb5f272813baa1f3809e90b10714ecb-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_Mistral Vibe, 16 October 2026._

[Mistral Vibe](https://mistral.ai/products/vibe), which used to be called Le Chat, is described by Mistral as its AI chat and agent for work and code: chat, think, search, write, code and automate. The page pitches it as an agent for long tasks that knows your tools and your knowledge. Mistral also puts "Sovereign AI" at the top of its site.

**Best for:** teams that want a European provider, and people who write code or build automations.

**Watch out for:** it is newer to a mainstream audience than the big three, so check that the integrations you need are there.

### DeepSeek: open models you can also run yourself

![Screenshot of the DeepSeek website, taken on 16 October 2026](https://cdn.sanity.io/images/9g0lkkr3/production/b03d17073bf143c54d48d5e02d1b616dbc4f0fba-1440x810.jpg?w=1400&auto=format)
_DeepSeek, 16 October 2026._

[DeepSeek](https://www.deepseek.com/en/) describes itself as an AI research company that builds and open-sources large language models, including DeepSeek-V4, DeepSeek-R1 and DeepSeek-Coder. You can chat on the web with DeepThink and Search modes, or use the API. The home page announces the official release of DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, with better text and agent performance and native image understanding.

**Best for:** developers, and anyone who wants open models and an API.

**Watch out for:** read its data policy before you paste in customer details, and treat it like any third party with your data.

## Which one should you try first?

| If you want to... | Start with |
| --- | --- |
| Write and edit long copy, or work through documents | Claude |
| Do everything inside your Google account, with images and video | Gemini |
| Stay inside Microsoft products with your team | Microsoft Copilot |
| Research with sources you can check | Perplexity |
| Get live answers from the web and X | Grok |
| Get a free assistant inside Meta apps | Meta AI |
| Use a European provider, or build automations | Mistral Vibe |
| Use open models or an API | DeepSeek |

Our own advice is to pick two and use them for a week on the same real jobs. Give both the same product, the same brief and the same supplier question, then compare. You will learn more from that than from any ranking, including this one.

## Using these on a Shopify store

- **Product copy.** Draft with any of them, then check every fact. Material, size and care claims are the ones that cause returns.
- **Customer questions.** Paste your ten most common emails into an assistant and ask for a first draft of each reply. Edit them into your own voice before you use them.
- **Research.** Use Perplexity or Deep Research style tools for competitor and supplier questions, and open the sources.
- **Inside your store.** Shopify has its own assistant, [Sidekick](https://www.shopify.com/sidekick), built into the admin. It edits themes and builds simple automations, and it is a different job from a general chat tool.
- **Being found by these tools.** The assistants above now answer shopping questions too. If you want your products read correctly by them, that is the work we do under [AI Shopping Optimization](https://www.ecompanda.co/ai-search/ai-shopping).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a better AI than ChatGPT?

It depends on the job. For long writing and working through documents many people prefer Claude. For research with sources, Perplexity. For Google and Android users, Gemini. No single tool wins every task, which is why we suggest trying two on the same work.

### Are there free alternatives to ChatGPT?

Yes. Perplexity and Meta AI both describe themselves as free on their own sites, and the others on this list have a way to try them without paying. What each free plan includes changes often, so check the vendor's plans page.

### Which one is best for writing product descriptions?

Any of the big assistants will give you a usable first draft. The real work is the check afterwards: compare every claim with the product itself. Give the assistant your brand voice notes and two examples you like, and the drafts improve a lot.

### Which one is best for code?

Claude, Grok, Mistral Vibe and DeepSeek all say on their own sites that they write code. For a Shopify theme or a small script, try two of them on the same small task and read what they produce before you paste it into a live theme.
