Should you move?

When leaving BigCommerce makes sense, and when it does not.

The June 2026 plan change is a reason to look. It is not a reason on its own.

It usually makes sense when

  • Your invoice changed after 1 June 2026 and, once you total every fee, Shopify comes out lower or simpler.
  • Your catalogue is built on size, colour and similar variants rather than personalised options.
  • One product needs more than BigCommerce's 600 variants. Shopify allows 2,048.
  • You want one app ecosystem and one checkout, and your team knows which plugins you use today.

Pause first when

  • The gateway fee is your only complaint. Moving to a gateway on BigCommerce's embedded list may remove it, so check that list before you rebuild a store.
  • You sell personalised products with text, date or file-upload options, and have no budget for an app or custom theme code.
  • A product needs more than three option choices on one page and cannot be split.
  • You are in a peak sales period and nobody can own the redirect list.

The big mapping problem

Variants move. Modifiers need a plan.

BigCommerce has two kinds of product choice. A variant is a thing on a shelf, like a small red shirt. It gets its own SKU, stock and price.

A modifier is a choice that does not change the item picked from the shelf, such as engraving text, a date, an uploaded file, a gift checkbox, or a pick list of add-on products. A modifier has no SKU and no stock count. BigCommerce lets you add as many as you like to a product.

For custom choices such as text, dates or file uploads, Shopify's help points to a third-party app or theme code that reads line item properties. If you sell personalised goods, we design that first.

Shared options. BigCommerce also offers shared variant options and shared modifier options, which can be reused across products. We check which of your products use them.

What moves

What comes across from BigCommerce, and what needs work.

BigCommerce's own transfer guides show which data a CSV file carries and which only the API reaches. Those guides cover moves between BigCommerce stores, but they show what each export holds. The transfer guide we read covers the legacy import and export experience, so we check your store's importer too.

WhatStatusWhat to know
Products, variants and imagesMoves, with limitsVariants and images export by CSV. BigCommerce allows 600 SKUs per product and 250 values per option. Shopify allows 2,048 variants but only 3 options per product. Source: BigCommerce Help: Platform limits
ModifiersWe rebuild itThe transfer guide lists modifiers as API only. BigCommerce's variants guide adds that price and weight rules can be imported for existing modifier options, but new options cannot be created by CSV. Shopify's help points to an app or theme code (line item properties) for custom choices like text, date or file upload, so each becomes an app field or theme code. Bulk pricing, price lists and complex rulesWe rebuild itBulk pricing and complex rules are API only. Price lists also have a free BigCommerce importer and exporter app. Shopify has B2B catalogs and price lists on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Which feature sits on which plan is not confirmed here. Product reviewsMoves, with limitsNot in the CSV export. BigCommerce lists a free importer and exporter app and the API. Source: BigCommerce Help: Transferring products
Videos and product filtersMoves, with limitsFilters are API only. Videos come by API or by hand. Filters are rebuilt with Shopify's own filter tools. Source: BigCommerce Help: Transferring products
Customers and addressesMovesBy CSV or API. Group access and group discounts reach only through the API. Source: BigCommerce Help: Transferring customers
Customer passwordsCannot be movedBigCommerce cannot export them. Shopify says a customer CSV cannot carry passwords across. Source: Shopify Help Center: Importing and exporting customer lists
Historical ordersMoves, with limitsBigCommerce lists orders as API or manual only, not CSV. Shopify takes historical orders by app or Order API. Source: BigCommerce Help: Transferring other data
Gift certificates and coupon codesMoves, with limitsGift certificates go by API or a free importer app. Coupon codes go by API. Shopify takes gift cards by app or the GiftCard API. Source: BigCommerce Help: Transferring other data
Promotion rulesWe rebuild itBigCommerce says automatic and coupon promotions cannot be transferred between stores, and their conditions are set up again by hand. We do the same on Shopify. Source: BigCommerce Help: Transferring other data
Existing 301 redirectsMovesExportable to CSV on paid plans. Shopify imports redirects from CSV. Source: BigCommerce Help: 301 redirects
Theme and appsWe rebuild itNeither moves. We build a new Online Store 2.0 theme and replace each app one by one.

Four things that catch people out

The four problems we plan around on every BigCommerce move.

  • A sieve lets only some cubes through, while a second pipe carries the rest.

A CSV export leaves things behind

BigCommerce's guides show that modifiers, bulk pricing, price lists, product filters, videos and reviews do not come out in a product file, and that orders and coupon codes need the API. Some have a free importer app or a manual route. A move built only on spreadsheets would drop them without any warning. We pull each from the API and count it against the source.

  • A payment path splits into an open lane and a lane with a toll booth and a small stack of coins.

The 2026 plan change is a number to check

From 1 June 2026 BigCommerce renamed its plans Core, Growth, Scale and Performance, set GMV thresholds, and added an Open Payment Provider fee of 2.0, 1.0 or 0.6 percent on Core, Growth and Scale. It applies to gateways outside BigCommerce's embedded list, and includes offline orders. Core and Growth prices are unchanged. Open your own invoice before you assume it affects you.

  • A map of street signs with arrows leads from a squarer old grid to a new, tidier one.

    Filter and brand links break

Shopify's own redirect help uses a BigCommerce-style brand link with a query string as an example that might not redirect as expected. We redirect the clean category or brand page, not every parameter combination.

  • A pegboard with only three pegs per row next to a very tall rack with space for a vast number of variants.

The limits run in opposite directions

BigCommerce allows 600 SKUs per product and 250 values per option. Shopify allows 2,048 variants but only 3 options per product. A product with many sizes and colours gains room. A product with four choice axes loses it and needs a decision.

URLs

BigCommerce addresses against Shopify's fixed paths.

BigCommerce URL types, the Shopify path each moves to, and what the redirect list must handle
On BigCommerceOn ShopifyWhat the redirect list must handle
Existing 301 rules (Settings, 301 Redirects)URL redirects, imported by CSVWe export them and fold them into the new list so old chains collapse into one hop.
Product pages/products/handleThe exact pattern is read from your crawl. We do not assume BigCommerce's default.
Category pages/collections/handleOne flat path per collection. The category tree moves into the menus.
Brand pages, for example /brands/name.htmlA collection, or the vendor viewShopify reserves /collections/vendors and /collections/types and cannot redirect them. An .html address cannot be redirected to the same address without .html.
Faceted links with query stringsNo equivalentShopify says these may not redirect as expected. We redirect the clean page.
Blog posts and web pagesBlog articles and pagesEach needs its own redirect to the matching article or page.

What we do

How we run a BigCommerce migration.

  1. Audit

Count what a CSV would miss

We pull a list of modifiers, bulk pricing, price lists, reviews, videos, coupons and gift certificates through the API, and compare it with what a plain export holds.

  2. Decide

    Settle modifiers before anything else

Every product with modifiers gets a plan: an app field, theme code, a split into separate products, or removal. You approve it in writing.

  3. Trial

    Import and count

Products, then customers, then orders and reviews into a staging store. We compare counts with BigCommerce and open sample products.

  4. Payments

Connect the gateway and test orders

We connect your payment methods, run test orders including a personalised one, and total your fees side by side so the move is judged on the whole bill.

  5. Launch

    Redirects, switch and watch

We test the redirect list on staging, switch the domain, import orders placed since the trial, then crawl and watch Search Console. What moves, we fix.

Questions

Questions, answered

Why are some merchants leaving BigCommerce in 2026?

BigCommerce changed its plans on 1 June 2026: new plan names, new GMV thresholds, a 0.9 percent Scale overage, and an Open Payment Provider fee of 2.0, 1.0 or 0.6 percent for gateways outside its embedded list. Core and Growth prices are unchanged. Whether it affects you depends on your gateway and sales, so check your own invoice.

What happens to my product options and modifiers?

Variant options become Shopify options, up to 3 per product and 2,048 variants. Modifiers such as text, date and file-upload fields are handled on Shopify with an app or theme code that reads line item properties, so we rebuild them that way.

Can I move my reviews, bulk pricing and price lists?

Yes, but not by spreadsheet. BigCommerce's own transfer guide shows these do not come out in a CSV. We pull them by API or through BigCommerce's free importer apps, then load them into Shopify with a review app and B2B price tools.

Can you move my order history?

Yes. BigCommerce lists orders as API or manual only, not CSV. Shopify takes historical orders by app or Order API. We import them after products and customers.

Do my customers keep their passwords?

No. BigCommerce cannot export passwords, and Shopify says a customer CSV cannot carry them across. Imported customers already have a Shopify profile and can sign in with an emailed code or set a new password.

What about my redirects?

We export your BigCommerce 301 rules, then add a redirect for every other address that earned traffic or links. Shopify allows 100,000 redirects, 20,000,000 on Plus, and does not reliably redirect links with query strings.

Do my theme and apps transfer?

No. Themes and apps do not move between the platforms. We build a new Online Store 2.0 theme and replace each app with a Shopify app, a built-in feature or custom code.

Which limits get better, and which get worse?

Variants get better: Shopify allows 2,048 per product against BigCommerce's 600. Options get tighter: Shopify allows 3 options per product. If you have products with four or more choice axes, we find them in the audit and decide how to handle each one.
