Rank Preservation is Ecompanda’s engineering protocol for protecting organic search rankings and AI citations during a Shopify replatform. We inventory 100% of indexed and backlinked legacy URLs, engineer a deterministic single-hop (301 -> 200 OK) redirect table, preserve on-page entity and heading parity, and monitor Google Search Console for 14 days post-cutover. Included in all Migration Sprints or available via our $1,200 USD Migration Audit.

Migrate Practice · Zero-Chain 301 & Canonical Parity

Every legacy URL accounted for, single-hop, with the map published.

Rank preservation is not an afterthought you run the night before DNS cutover. We build the complete URL inventory from your crawler logs, Google Search Console, Ahrefs/Semrush backlink targets, and AI citation URLs before a single template is merged.

01 · Scope Boundary & Equal-Weight Exclusions

Written in black and white before any work starts.

Every Ecompanda engagement lists what is excluded at equal visual weight to what is included. We ship on an isolated staging theme (`git` branch) and never modify production without your explicit sign-off.

Included in Scope

  • ✓Union URL inventory combining live site crawl, Google Search Console pages, XML sitemaps, backlink targets, and AI citation URLs
  • ✓1:1 single-hop 301 mapping (`legacy-path -> final-canonical-shopify-path`) with zero intermediate hops
  • ✓Title, H1, canonical, and JSON-LD `Product` / `@id` parity verification between legacy and new pages
  • ✓Pre-cutover and post-cutover automated HTTP status verification log

Explicitly Excluded (Never in Scope)

  • ✕Bulk redirecting discontinued products or categories to the homepage (which Google treats as a Soft 404)

02 · Execution Cadence

How the engagement runs from Day 1.

01 · INVENTORY

Four-Source URL Union

We merge URLs from Screaming Frog, Google Search Console, backlink exports, and our 60-prompt AI citation scan so no traffic-bearing URL is missed.

02 · MAP & TEST

Single-Hop 301 Construction

Every legacy path is mapped directly to its final canonical Shopify URL, collapsing any pre-existing legacy redirect chains.

03 · MONITOR

Cutover Verification & 14-Day Watch

At DNS cutover we run an automated HTTP check across every row in the map and monitor Search Console coverage daily for two weeks.

Why is redirecting old product URLs to the homepage dangerous?

Google’s documentation and John Mueller have stated repeatedly that redirecting specific product or category URLs to a generic homepage is treated as a Soft 404, dropping all ranking signals for that URL. Every legacy URL must map to its matching product, successor SKU, or parent collection.
