Shopify connects eligible US stores to AI shopping. We set up the rest.
Agentic commerce setup for Shopify, built on what is live today.
We set up what AI shopping agents read from your store, which checkout path each channel uses, and how you measure the result. We set up only what Shopify and the platforms ship today, and we date every claim.
- 1FoundCan agents find your products? We set up Catalog eligibility, data and mapping.
- 2UnderstoodCan they answer a shopper’s questions? We set up policies, product detail and agent files.
- 3BoughtDoes the sale reach a checkout that works? We set up the checkout path for each channel.
- 4MeasuredCan you see what they send you?We set up a dated baseline and your own reports.
The gap
Shopify switched AI shopping on. It did not set your store up.
Eligible stores are in the channels by default. What an agent can read, and what happens when a shopper buys, still depends on your store.
On is not the same as included
Shopify leaves out some categories, for example CBD supplements, prescription and medical products, alcohol, tobacco and services, and it wants the store in good standing. Where a product is left out, the admin shows a reason. Someone has to read it and fix it.
Source: Shopify Help: Catalog requirementsAgents read your data, not your design
Channels take titles, descriptions, barcodes, variants and policies. Shopify says complete policies let an agent answer a return question correctly. A missing barcode or an unfinished return policy is a gap in what the agent can quote.
Source: Shopify Help: optimizing your products for AI platformsDirect checkout changes how your store behaves
In Google, Copilot and Meta direct checkout, Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire, and subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and pickup are not supported. Switching it off is one setting. Knowing whether you should is the work.
Source: Shopify Help: GoogleYou cannot manage what you cannot see
With pixels silent in direct checkout, Shopify’s own Agentic reports may be your only count, and Shopify says they are not yet available for headless stores. The baseline has to be taken before anything changes.

What you get
One setup sheet per store: what we check, what we set up, what you decide
Every setup produces the same sheet for your store. The last column is yours: we do not switch a channel off or change policy wording without your say.
Whether Shopify includes your products, and the reason it gives for any it leaves out.
Agentic terms, channel settings, titles, barcodes, variants and Catalog Mapping.
Which channels stay on.
Whether your policies and product pages answer a shopper’s questions.
Complete policies, real specs and sizing, and agent files that answer on every host you use.
The wording of policies and claims.
What direct checkout will not support in your store.
The checkout path for each channel, with its limits written down.
Direct checkout on or off, per channel.
What your own reports can and cannot see.
A dated baseline, repeated after the changes, with the limits beside the result.
Which numbers you act on.
Each row starts with a check, so you see the state of your store before anything changes.
Start with a check of your store.
Send us your store address. We run the checks, send written findings, and you decide what to set up.
- A written check first
- You decide before anything changes
- Built only on what is live today
After you start
What happens after you send your store address
We read your admin with you
Eligibility, channels, direct checkout, Catalog Mapping and the reasons Shopify gives for anything it leaves out. Shopify says the Agentic page needs the owner or a staff account with Products and Agentic permissions, and we ask for no more than that.
We run the live checks
The checklist further down, on your real domain and every host you use, saved with the date.
You get written findings
What is fine, what to fix and what is your call, in plain words, with the evidence beside each item.
We set up in a copy first
Mapping, policy text and theme changes go in a duplicate theme or a draft. You read them before they go live.
We hand over a baseline
Your own Agentic reports, saved before and repeated after the changes, with their limits written beside the result.
Where we do the work
The work behind the sheet
Four places where the setup time goes, and what we do in each.

Your catalog data, mapped
Channels read title, description, images, type, vendor, collections, tags, barcodes, variants and option names, and real data often sits in metafields or tags. We read what leaves your store, compare it with the page and Merchant Center, and use Catalog Mapping to point each field at the right source. Shopify says mapping does not guarantee placement or wording.
Source: Shopify Help: optimizing your products for AI platforms
Policies and pages that answer
All four channels need your Terms, Privacy and Return policies complete, and Shopify asks for legal disclosures inside the first 6,000 characters of the description. We finish the policies in plain words and put real specs, sizing and care on the page. This is Shopify’s advice, and it has not published a measured effect.

A checkout path you chose
We list what direct checkout touches in your store, such as pixels, subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and pickup, and you decide channel by channel. Turning it off sends the buyer to your own checkout.

Built on dates, not press releases
Endpoints move. Shopify removed the old catalog and cart tools on its Storefront MCP, and the Global Catalog REST API stops serving on 2 November 2026. We check every claim against its source and date before we build on it.

Where it ends
The assistant finds the product. The sale ends at your checkout.
For ChatGPT, and wherever you switch direct checkout off, the buyer finishes on your own checkout. Where it is on, Google, Copilot and Meta take the order and Shopify passes it to you. You stay merchant of record either way.

Fit
Is this setup for you?
It fits if
- You sell to US customers on Shopify and want to know what AI channels show of your store.
- You use subscriptions, bundles, pickup or tracking apps and want to know what direct checkout changes.
- You run a headless front end and need to know whether agents can reach it.
- You were pitched an "agentic readiness" package and want a second opinion first.
It does not fit if
- You sell only outside the US, Canada and Mexico. The Shopify pages we read list US buyers, plus Canada and Mexico for Meta.
- You want a guaranteed placement or a promise of orders.
- Your products are B2B only. Shopify leaves out B2B-only products it can identify, though custom B2B setups may still show up.
- You want to be first to build a protocol that Shopify already supplies.
What we build on
Channels: what is live today
We set up only what is live. This is the dated state of each channel, from sources we opened on 20 October 2026. Shopify’s help pages carry no launch dates, so none is shown for them.
How to read the status chips
- LiveA merchant can use it today.
- Live, limitedLive, but only for some stores or countries.
- Pilot or by approvalBy approval, invitation or early access.
- Pre-1.0, changingPublished, still changing, no stable version.
- Pulled backReduced or stopped by the company that made it.
| What | Status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify agentic storefronts (Sales channels, Agentic) | Live | On by default for eligible stores once you accept Shopify’s agentic terms and complete your Terms, Privacy and Return policies. Google also needs a US-based store with Merchant Center. You can switch each channel off. Shopify states no launch date on its help pages. Source: Shopify Help |
| Shopify Catalog | Live | Eligible products go in automatically. Shopify excludes some categories, for example CBD supplements, prescription and medical products, alcohol, tobacco and services, and wants the store in good standing: read the requirements page for your products. You cannot opt out of Catalog itself, and inclusion does not guarantee an appearance or a position. Source: Shopify Help: Catalog requirements |
| ChatGPT product discovery | Live | For Shopify stores the data arrives through Catalog and the store must sell to US customers. Shopify says ChatGPT is a discovery channel: the buyer pays on your own checkout. Source: Shopify Help: ChatGPT |
| ChatGPT Instant Checkout (OpenAI-hosted) | Pulled back | On 24 March 2026 OpenAI wrote that the first version was not flexible enough and that merchants may use their own checkout. Its help page today still says some eligible merchants may show it, so it is pulled back and limited, not gone. Source: OpenAI blog, 24 March 2026 |
| ChatGPT direct product feed | Pilot or by approval | Open to approved partners who apply. Shopify merchants need nothing extra. Source: OpenAI developer docs |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini checkout | Live, limited | Two sources differ on how open this is. Google’s help page says select merchants, through an interest form. Shopify says it is rolling out to eligible stores that are based in and sell to the US, and may not be on in your store yet. Google’s own September blog says UCP checkout already reaches a large number of brands, with no figure we can check. Source: Google Merchant Center help |
| Google Business Agent | Live, limited | Live in 2026 for eligible US retailers: a US store, a verified Merchant Center account, at least 50 approved listings and a claimed brand profile. Some features are still marked "coming soon". Source: Google brand profile help |
| Microsoft Copilot Checkout | Live, limited | US buyers, English-language merchants and USD only, with no expansion date. Shopify stores are enrolled by default and can opt out in the admin. Source: Microsoft Advertising |
| Meta AI and Muse | Live, limited | Shopify lists direct checkout for buyers in the US, Canada and Mexico, and says "when available" for the Muse surface. Source: Shopify Help: Meta |
| Perplexity Instant Buy | Live, limited | Available to users in the US, with merchants that are compatible with Perplexity’s checkout. We could not open current merchant enrolment terms, and Perplexity is not a named channel on Shopify’s pages. Source: Perplexity help |
What we leave alone
Protocols and payments: still changing
None of these is a setting on a Shopify store, and we do not sell them as a setup. We list them because agency pages often sell them as if they were settled.
| What | Status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Pre-1.0, changing | Open source, from Google, Shopify and others, with its own councils and no foundation that we found. Four releases in 2026, the latest on 25 August, and the three most recent carry breaking changes. No release is labelled 1.0. Shopify stores already publish a UCP profile. Source: UCP releases |
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | Pre-1.0, changing | Maintained by OpenAI and Stripe, with Meta also listed as a lead maintainer. The project says beta, has no tagged release, and has dated versions from September 2025 to April 2026. We found no statement that ACP and UCP will merge. Source: ACP repository |
| Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) | Pre-1.0, changing | Version 0.2, April 2026. Google said on 28 April 2026 that it is donating the work to the FIDO Alliance. It matters to payment providers more than to a merchant. Source: AP2 releases |
| Stripe agentic commerce for sellers | Live, limited | Stripe’s own terms label the seller service "Preview". Some checkout hooks are private preview, US only. Shopify stores use Shopify’s own path. Source: Stripe service terms |
| PayPal Store Sync and Agent Ready | Pilot or by approval | By request: a merchant fills in a form to reach PayPal’s team. The Store Sync partners on its page are Wix, BigCommerce’s commerce arm and Shopware. Shopify is not named there. Source: PayPal developer page |
| Visa Intelligent Commerce | Pilot or by approval | Developer access is limited to banks and approved users. Visa described live agent purchases at named European merchants on 2 July 2026 as a next phase of a programme, not general availability. These are Visa’s own releases. Source: Visa developer page |
| Visa Trusted Agent Protocol | Pre-1.0, changing | A way for a merchant or its edge provider to check that an agent is who it says. Visa’s spec says merchants are not required to use it. We saw no version number, and its sample code has had no commit since October 2025. Source: Visa specification |
| Mastercard Agent Pay | Live, limited | Agent tokens are handled by the network and the processor. Mastercard’s merchant guide says the first level needs minimal changes: existing checkout forms work as they are, and the main job is not to block legitimate agent traffic. Its Verifiable Intent spec is Draft v0.1. Source: Mastercard merchant guide |
| x402 and Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) | Pre-1.0, changing | Payment rails for machine-to-machine and API charges, often in stablecoins. The MPP draft at the IETF has expired, and Stripe labels it "Frontier". We found nothing that ties either to a Shopify store checkout. Source: Stripe MPP docs |
Already done by Shopify
What we do not charge you for
If an agency offers to get you into these channels, or to write these files as a growth lever, it is selling something Shopify already does for an eligible store.
- Automatic
Catalog feeds the channels
Eligible products are shared with ChatGPT, Copilot, Meta and Shop with no action. Google AI Mode and Gemini use your Google & YouTube channel and Merchant Center instead.
Source: Shopify Help: agentic storefronts - Default
Discovery files
Every store serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, and Shopify says no third-party app is needed. On the two live stores we read, the files are the same generic text with the store name swapped. You can replace them with Liquid templates.
Source: Shopify changelog, 28 May 2026 - Default
A UCP profile
Stores publish /.well-known/ucp, which lists the protocol version, what the store supports and which payment handlers it accepts. The two stores we read advertise version 2026-08-25.

Agent cart and checkout tools
Shopify runs the cart and checkout endpoints agents call. You stay merchant of record. The checkout tools need authentication or a signed request, and a purchase that needs review is sent to your prefilled checkout.

Preview and listing quality
The Agentic page in the admin has a search preview and a listing quality meter with five signals, and reports on sales, orders and sessions by channel. Shopify calls the preview directional, not a prediction.

Knowledge Base app
Free on every plan. It shows the FAQs Shopify generates about your store, which AI shopping agents use, and lets you add your own.

Do it yourself
Or run the check yourself in fifteen minutes
Replace yourdomain with the address customers use. Test the host the store really serves: one store we tried redirects www to the bare domain.
| Check | Where | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Agent instructions file | yourdomain/agents.md | Returns 200 with readable text. Shopify serves a default file on theme stores. |
| Discovery files | yourdomain/llms.txt and /llms-full.txt | Same default text. On a headless front end, test every host: one store we tried returned 404 on www but served the files on its bare domain and checkout host. |
| UCP profile | yourdomain/.well-known/ucp | JSON with a version (2026-08-25 on the stores we read), capabilities and an endpoint. |
| Old tool endpoints | /.well-known/mcp and /api/mcp | Both returned 404 on the two Shopify stores we tried. Do not use them as a test. |
| Crawler rules | yourdomain/robots.txt | No blanket block on the search bots you want. Shopify calls robots.txt advisory, and says it does not stop Catalog sending data to channels. |
| Agentic admin | Admin, Sales channels, Agentic | A product count or a stated reason you are ineligible. Channels you meant to have on. The "manage for me" and direct checkout settings match what you want. |
| Policies | Settings, Policies | Terms, Privacy and Return and refund all filled in. |
| Google & YouTube channel and Merchant Center | Product and shipping sync on, account healthy, policies matching the store. | |
| Unsupported features | Your theme and apps | A list of subscriptions, bundles, customizable products, pickup, login before checkout and any pixel you rely on. |
| Listing quality | Agentic page, search preview | Run your top queries and read the five signals. Directional only. |
| Baseline | Agentic reports in the admin | Sales, orders, sessions and conversion by channel, saved today. Direct checkout hides pixels, so this may be the only count. |

Rather have us run the check?
Send us your store address. We run all of it, on every host you use, and send back written findings.
Our limits
What we will and will not do
We will
- Tell you the status and date of every claim we make, with the page behind it.
- Fix the data, policies and settings that Shopify leaves to you.
- Check what direct checkout changes in your store, before you leave it on.
- Measure with your own first-party reports and say what they cannot show.
We will not
- Sign you up for ChatGPT, Google or Copilot. For an eligible Shopify store that is already done.
- Write an llms.txt or agents.md as a growth lever. Shopify serves them, and Google says Search ignores llms.txt.
- Promise a position, a citation, an order or a visibility score.
- Call a store "ACP compliant" or "UCP certified". We found no certificate for either, and both still change.
- Recommend building against a protocol spec for a Shopify store. Shopify tracks UCP for you, and a build on one snapshot can break at the next.
- Sell or build OpenAI-hosted checkout inside ChatGPT.
Questions
Questions, answered
What does an agentic commerce setup include?
Four parts: getting your catalog eligible, complete and mapped; making your policies and product pages answer an agent’s questions and checking the agent files on every host; choosing the checkout path for each channel with its limits known; and a dated baseline from your own reports. We set up only what is live today.
How much does it cost?
We scope it after a first look at your store, because the work depends on your catalog, policies, apps and front end. The first step is the check, and you see its written findings before you decide on anything else.
How long does it take?
It depends on the store. A headless front end, a large catalog or many checkout apps take longer. We give you a date after the check, not before it.
What access do you need?
Shopify says the Agentic page needs the store owner, or a staff account with Products view and App and sales channel Agentic permissions. We ask for no more than that.
Will you change my live theme?
Not without you reading it first. Theme, mapping and policy changes go in a duplicate theme or a draft, and you approve them before they go live.
Do I need to do anything to appear in ChatGPT?
If your Shopify store sells to US customers and your products are eligible for Catalog, Shopify says no extra product work is needed. It asks that you accept its agentic terms and complete your Terms, Privacy and Return policies. Some categories are excluded, for example CBD supplements, and appearing is never guaranteed. A store with no Shopify online store uses a separate Agentic plan, where direct checkout starts off.
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout live?
OpenAI wrote on 24 March 2026 that merchants may use their own checkout and that it is focusing on product discovery. Its help page still says some eligible merchants may show an Instant Checkout option. For a Shopify store, ChatGPT sends the buyer to your own checkout.
What are UCP and ACP, and which should I build for?
UCP comes from Google and Shopify with others. ACP is maintained by OpenAI and Stripe, with Meta also a listed maintainer. Both are date-versioned and still changing, and we found no plan to merge them. On Shopify you build for neither: the platform supports them for you.
Can I opt out?
You can switch off individual channels in the Agentic page, and you can stop Shopify auto-enrolling new ones. Shopify says you cannot opt out of Catalog itself. Shop, Shopify’s own app, is not switched off there. Removal can take up to seven days to stop product data being shared, and a channel may still find public pages by crawling.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Shopify already serves /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt and /agents.md on theme stores. Google says its Search ignores llms.txt. We check the files on every host you use, and we do not sell them as a growth lever.
Does it work outside the US?
The Shopify pages we read list US buyers for ChatGPT, Copilot and Google, and the US, Canada and Mexico for Meta. We found no UK or EU eligibility on them. Google said in May that checkout would reach Canada and Australia in the coming months, and Shopify’s pages list neither for Google.
What about Visa, Mastercard, Stripe and PayPal?
Visa and Mastercard programmes run between the networks, banks and agents, and Mastercard says its first level needs minimal changes. Stripe’s seller service is labelled Preview, and PayPal’s is by request. None of these is a setting on a Shopify store, so none is part of the setup.
Can you guarantee orders from AI assistants?
No one can. OpenAI says ChatGPT chooses products itself, Shopify says inclusion does not guarantee an appearance or a position, and we found no public measure of agent orders with a method. We offer a setup, written findings and honest reporting.
